Cuthbright Pitt

Have you ever looked at the hill opposite Manor Farm on Thorpe Road and wondered why there are a couple of trees growing in the depression on the western side of the hill?

Whilst transcribing a 1584 Land Tax Survey for Harthill, we discovered the following two entries:

"on the west syde (side) of Cudbrygte Hill ? ? the pytt in the holding of Mr Waterhouse ? half an acre Mr Serleby on one syde (side)."

Also

"lande lying between Cudbrygt Pytt & the hiyeway (highway) landing (leading) to Thorp Salvyn..."

We are not sure what kind of pit may have been here in Tudor times, but it is similar in appearance to lead mines that can still be seen in the Peak District.
